fresh greens and a fresh outlook
Food is something with which we all connect. Whether around the dinner table or around the community, food brings us together.
Grow-a-row
A big green thumbs-up to our local growers.
Know that every donation from a garden makes an impact. When we can add fresh produce to a hamper, we are helping to alleviate hunger with healthy food options. Who doesn’t love getting fresh-from-the-garden vegetables?
When you grow-a-row, it makes a difference. Gardening, volunteering and giving back are all great activities for your heart, and your community!
Some of the produce we see come in from our local gardeners include beets, potatoes, peas, beans, zucchini, tomatoes, lettuce and spinach, onions, carrots and corn.
Farmers and small producers can get involved too! Do you have an acre or two of land not suited to your needs but is still viable for growing? Do you have more capacity in your greenhouse than what you need? Consider donating the space you are not using!
How to participate
We are keen to work with you on your growing donations!
Home gardeners, as always we ask that your help out the Food Bank with the Grow-A-Row initiative. When you are planning your garden, plant an extra row or two of something you can donate for others to alleviate their hunger. Plus, we are building an army of green-thumbed volunteers who love this kind of work. Do you have extra produce from your backyard trees or gardens? Our Harvest Team can come help collect it if you are unable to complete it yourself.
In the past, home gardeners have brought in an amazing assortment of tomatoes, potatoes, zucchini and other squash, apples, carrots and other produce that takes a strain off the demand for fresh food to add to our emergency hampers.
Farmers and producers, we have an opportunity for you to donate your space and receive some benefit from doing so. By donating an acre or two of land, or excess space in your greenhouse, you are not only helping feed others but you can get a tax receipt for your farm business based on the pounds of produce that comes from your donation.
We can provide volunteers to plant, maintain and harvest the crops grown in your farm or greenhouse space, and will respect your property with the utmost professionalism and courtesy.
The crops we receive from local gardeners, small producers and farms have made a substantial difference in how we can satisfactorily fill families’ hampers every year. We’ve had small producers bring in pumpkins, sweet potatoes, and carrots, among other hardy varieties of vegetables. Home owners have donated bushels of apples and plenty of assorted fruits and vegetables. All of these have made a significant impact on the quality of food we can provide to families in need.
