40th Anniversary Open House and Food Drive

commemorate our 40th anniversary by touring our facility, donating, and enjoying cake and BBQ Foods.

The Red Deer Food Bank is holding an open house on Saturday, April 13th, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. to celebrate 40 years of service to the Red Deer community and Central Alberta.

The Food Bank’s service started on April 11th, 1984, and has seen a massive demand increase, particularly a 93% increase since 2019 alone.

Over recent years, the facility has undergone many changes spanning three bays, including adding a commercial kitchen, teaching kitchen, greenhouse, and hydroponics.

Open House

The open house will kick off with a commemorative cake cutting at 11:00 a.m. in Bay 10, open to all community members.

You can tour the facilities, sign up to volunteer or ask questions about our operations, food services, and hamper distribution.

What to expect:

Visit the Red Deer Food Bank to learn about all the changes and processes.

  • Chef Shane and Chef Michael will be preparing meals for the following week in the Rotary Club of Red Deer East Community Kitchen. They will be available to answer any questions about Meals-To-Go, Catering, or Food Trucks.

  • Upstairs, in the new culinary teaching kitchen, Chef Maia and Meg from “Cook with Meg” will have snacks and information on all our upcoming classes.

  • Downstairs, you can learn about our process of building hampers and what is in a typical hamper for our families.

  • In our sorting area, you can see how the donations and food are sorted and redistributed to minimize food waste.

  • The front office will accept monetary donations and help you apply to volunteer.

  • Outside, you can tour the food trucks and grab a hot dog or hamburger from “Frank,” the BBQ trailer, with a donation.

  • Sam, the green thumb, will be outside, ready to give tours of the greenhouse and hydroponics and discuss how the food bank is working towards sustainably producing its own food.

Throughout the Food Bank, staff and volunteers will happily answer your questions, walk you through the processes, and help you sign up for volunteering, classes or other kitchen services.

Food Drive

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is holding its 14th annual city-wide food drive for the Red Deer Food Bank on April 13th.

If you cannot attend the open house on April 13th, fill the plastic bag provided by church volunteers with food donations and place it on your porch for collection that day.

Want to volunteer for the food drive? To sign up for a route, visit www.justserve.org or rdfooddrive@gmail.com.

As a volunteer, you would need to drop off a donation bag to homes on an assigned route the week of April 8th, pick up the bags of food on April 13th, and deliver them to the Food Bank. While at the Food Bank, you can grab some BBQ at the Open House to thank you for your help.
