Job Posting: Food Production Technician

Location: Red Deer, Alberta

Schedule: Full-Time | Monday to Friday, with occasional weekends

The Red Deer Food Bank seeks a passionate, dedicated, and experienced Food Production Technician to join our growing food security initiatives. This role is an exciting opportunity for someone who thrives in a dynamic environment combining horticultural expertise and community service.

Our site features three hydroponic farms, a production greenhouse, a thriving microgreens operation, and outdoor community gardens — all focused on increasing fresh food access for those in need.


Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and maintain hydroponic systems, monitoring water quality, nutrient levels, lighting, and plant health.

  • Oversee greenhouse production, including seeding, transplanting, harvesting, and pest management.

  • Manage microgreens production, from germination through harvest and packaging.

  • Assist with community garden coordination and upkeep, supporting volunteers and educational programming.

  • General tasks include cleaning, organizing tools/equipment, compost management, and seasonal maintenance.

  • Collaborate with staff, volunteers, and community partners to maintain a welcoming and productive environment.


Qualifications:

  • Minimum 1–2 years of experience in greenhouse production, hydroponics, or related horticultural field

  • Strong understanding of plant care, irrigation, pest/disease identification, and food safety practices

  • Ability to lift to 50 lbs and work in various weather conditions

  • Excellent teamwork and communication skills; experience working with volunteers is an asset

  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills and attention to detail

  • Willingness to work occasional weekends and flexible hours as needed
